When it comes to dental care, understanding your insurance options can make a big difference in how you plan and pay for treatment. At VARNI Dental Care, we strive to make every aspect of your visit simple and stress-free—including working with your dental insurance. One of the most common types of plans our patients use is PPO dental insurance. In this blog, we'll break down what PPO dental insurance is, what it covers, and how we help you make the most of it.
PPO stands for Preferred Provider Organization. A PPO dental insurance plan offers you flexibility when choosing a dentist. With this type of plan, you can visit both in-network and out-of-network providers. However, seeing an in-network dentist usually means lower out-of-pocket costs, thanks to pre-negotiated rates between the provider and your insurance company.
PPO plans are especially popular because they provide a good balance between freedom of choice and cost savings.
Understanding the structure of a PPO plan can help you make smarter decisions about your care and spending.
First, most PPO plans have a network of dentists who have agreed to offer services at reduced rates. If you visit an in-network dentist like those at VARNI Dental, you’ll generally pay less for services. If you choose an out-of-network provider, the plan will still cover some of the cost, but you may be responsible for a larger portion of the bill.
Second, most PPO plans come with an annual maximum. This is the total dollar amount the insurance company will pay for your dental care within a year. Once you hit this limit, any additional dental expenses must be paid out-of-pocket.
There’s also a deductible, which is the amount you must pay out-of-pocket before your insurance starts contributing toward certain treatments. Preventive care is often covered even if you haven’t met your deductible yet.
Lastly, PPO plans typically require a co-payment or co-insurance, which means you’re responsible for a percentage of the cost of a service. For example, you might pay 20% of the cost of a filling, while your insurance covers the remaining 80%.
At VARNI Dental Care, we work with most major PPO plans and help patients understand and maximize their benefits. Coverage generally falls into three categories: preventive care, basic procedures, and major treatments.
Preventive care includes services like exams, cleanings, and X-rays. These are usually covered at 100% by your insurance, meaning there's no cost to you as long as you're within your network and benefit limits. This is why it’s so important to schedule routine checkups every six months.
Basic procedures include treatments like fillings and deep cleanings. These are usually covered at around 70% to 80%, depending on your plan. These services are essential to prevent minor issues from becoming major problems, and your PPO plan helps make them more affordable.
Major treatments, such as crowns, bridges, dentures, and root canals, are typically covered at 50%. While these treatments do involve higher out-of-pocket costs, they’re necessary to restore the function and appearance of your smile. At VARNI Dental, we always provide a treatment estimate beforehand and help you understand how your insurance will apply.
If your child is covered under your family’s PPO plan, many plans also include coverage for pediatric services such as fluoride treatments, dental sealants, and space maintainers. These preventive treatments are key to promoting long-term dental health in children.
At VARNI Dental, we go beyond just accepting your PPO insurance—we actively help you make the most of it. Here’s how:
We verify your benefits before your appointment so you know what your insurance covers. Our experienced front desk team will provide a clear explanation of your coverage, including what treatments are included, what your deductible is, and how much of your annual maximum is remaining.
We file insurance claims on your behalf, saving you the hassle of paperwork. We also handle follow-ups with your insurance company if needed, to make sure your claims are processed correctly and promptly.
We provide treatment estimates in advance. If a procedure requires a pre-authorization, we take care of it. We also help you plan your treatments around your benefits—for example, by spreading out procedures across two benefit years if you’re close to reaching your annual maximum.
We accept most PPO dental insurance providers, including Delta Dental, Cigna, Aetna, MetLife, Guardian, and many more. Even if you're not sure which network you're in, just give us a call and we'll be happy to check for you.
Many people don’t realize that dental insurance benefits usually reset at the end of the calendar year. If you haven’t used your preventive care visits or taken care of necessary dental work, those unused benefits will disappear—whether you’ve paid premiums or not.
Delaying treatment can often lead to more serious and more expensive dental problems down the road. For example, a small cavity that could be filled for a fraction of your annual maximum could turn into a root canal or extraction if left untreated.
If you’re unsure about your current dental benefits or haven't been to the dentist in a while, we recommend scheduling an appointment now—before your benefits reset.
At VARNI Dental, our mission is to provide high-quality care while making the financial side of dentistry easier for you to manage. We understand that insurance can be confusing, but we’re here to walk you through it. From benefit checks to claims processing and everything in between, our team is always ready to help.
Whether you’re due for a routine checkup or considering more extensive dental work, we’ll make sure you get the most out of your PPO dental insurance.
If you have PPO dental insurance and want to understand your coverage—or if you're just ready for a friendly, professional dental experience—contact VARNI Dental today. Our team will take care of the paperwork so you can focus on your smile.
